Torquato Tasso (born in Sorrento, March 11, 1544 - Rome, April 25, 1595) was an Italian writer and poet. His most important and best known work is the Jerusalem Delivered (1575 - La Gerusalemme liberata), that describes the clashes between Christians and Muslims at the end of the First Crusade, during the siege of Jerusalem. He was born in Sorrento on 11 March 1544. His father Bernard was a scholar and courtier in the service of Ferrante Sanseverino, Prince of Salerno in the Viceroyalty of Naples, while his mother, Portia de 'Rossi was descended from a noble family of Pistoia. A few years later the prince was banished from the kingdom and Bernardo followed his master, the spending the old-age in arduous occupations of the court and not very profitable. At the age of 6 years Torquato went to Sicily and the following years in Naples, where he was educated by Jesuits and where he met Ettore Thesorieri with whom he remained in correspondence. He stood up to ten years in Naples with his mother, then followed his father to the court of Urbino first, then in Venice. In the meantime, his mother ( remained in Naples) died, perhaps poisoned by his brothers.

Between 1560 and 1565, Tasso completed his studies in Padua and Bologna, study centers of culture of Aristotle. In the prestigious University of Padua, he studied law first, then literature and philosophy.
