Starting in the late 70's and early 80's these pioneers began sculpting thrash metal as we know it today.
At the late 1970's and early 1980's, there was a huge wave of British heavy metal music was circling. Expanding from punk rock and hardcore metal, thrash metal found its own style and technique. Thrash Metal gave the metal community more options with guitars, deeper bass guitars, faster drums and loud singing.
Trash metal is a combination of long intros, long solos and long endings. The technique of high speed solos was called shredding. Shredding used techniques like sweep picking, phrasing, tapping, hammer-ons, pull-offs and tremolo. This new and exciting style made guitarist better and song more energetic with the faster riffs, people were memorized.
After the release of Slayer's "Haunting the Chapel", Anthrax's "Fistful of Metal", Overkill's "Self Titled" and Metallica's "Ride the Lighting" albums were released in 1984, broke open thrash metal. All of these different bands brought something new to trash metal, usually competing in making the heaviest and fastest music. Thrash Metal was on the rise after this, the metal community had brought it in and it started to grow.
Through a couple of decades and into the 90's there was a small change in the music and in the bands. But the same bands were still leading the genre and were releasing new albums, but a little different than a couple of decades ago. With Metallica new albums "Load" and "Reload" released, the thrash metal they were know for turned into a heavy metal or hard rock. Megadeth also took a different path when they released the album "Countdown to Extinction."
With thrash metal become more and more unpopular, is it time for a comeback? Gama Bomb, Municipal Waste and Evile are some bands that are still pumping out the thrash metal. With new bands coming out in trash metal, Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth still lead the way. Thrash metal will always be a change of how music can be structure. Fast riffs, double bass and new techniques will always emerge, but they will be from the backbone of thrash metal.
