The old centre of Sorrento still shows the path of orthogonal streets of Roman origin, while to the mountain it is surrounded by sixteenth century walls. There you'll find the Cathedral, rebuilt in the fifteenth century, with neo-Gothic facade, and the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, with a remarkable fourteenth-century cloister with portico in Arabic style. In the "Correale Museum" there are on display collections of Greek and Roman artefacts and Capodimonte porcelains, with a section of paintings of the seventeenth-nineteenth century: from the park it possible to enjoy a magnificent view over the gulf. At the Punta del Capo, 3 km to the west, there are Roman ruins of the villa of Pollio Felice (first century AD). Another seaside villa is the Villa of Agrippa Posthumus, below the actual "Hotel Syrene". The villa was built by the hapless grandson of Augustus. Proceeding towards the Capo di Sorrento you can not help but notice on the main Corso Italia the Villa Fiorentino bequeathed by Mr and Mrs Fiorentino Cuomo to the town of Sorrento. His construction was completed in 1936 and it is now being used for exhibitions while his garden is used as a playground. On some occasions there are concerts.
To the town of Sorrento is dedicated one of the most famous Neapolitan songs, "Torna a Surriento". The song was composed for the visit to Sorrento of Giuseppe Zanardelli, then Prime Minister, on September 15, 1902.
