Sorrento is a small town inCampania, southernItaly, with some 16,500 inhabitants. It is a popular tourist destination not far from Pompeii and Naples. On the origins of Sorrento there is a legend reported by the historian Diodorus Siculus, who attributed the foundation of the town to Liparo, the son of Ausone, who was the king of Ausoni and son of Ulysses and of the sorceress Circe. According to this legend, the origin of city of Sorrento dates back to an Italic population, the Ausoni, which were one of the most ancient ethnic groups. In pre-Roman times the city suffered some influence on the part of Greek culture, as they seem to indicate itsurban, the remains of Parsano Porta, Porta Marina Grande, and the presence at Punta Campanella of Athenaion.
The great sanctuary, where it was celebrated the cult of Athena, was founded according to legend by Ulysses and devoted to the worship of the Sirens. All these elements may even suggest a presence of Greeks in period between 474 and 420 BC, when Sorrento was conquered by Sanniti. Sorrento later entered the orbit of Rome, against which it rebelled during the war when he participated in social Nuceria league, but was conquered in 90 BC together with Stabia by Papius Multius and finally reduced to obedience by Silla in the following year.
