Sorrento is a small town inCampania, southernItaly, with some 16,500 inhabitants. It is a popular tourist destination not far from Pompeii and Naples.On the origins of Sorrento there is a legend reported by the historian Diodorus Siculus, who attributed the foundation of the town to Liparo, the son of Ausone, who was the king of Ausoni and son of Ulysses and of the sorceress Circe. According to this legend, the origin of city of Sorrento dates back to an Italic population, the Ausoni, which were one of the most ancient ethnic groups.
