Air Sahara has seniors fares which appear to offer a very good discount.Domestic tickets can also be purchased abroad at the usual $US fare through partner airlines as well as from the airlines' overseas offices. They Can normally be added to your main ticket. i.e. a Mumbai-Goa segment with Jet could be added to a LAX-BOM ticket when buying through your neighborhood travel agent. Perhaps it is due to the sinking USD, but the $ fares now appear to be lower than regular Rupee fares by around 8% on the Indian Airlines site. Itmay be true at Jet as well.
The ticket 'auctions', like some of the other programs such as 'apex' fares are only available for Indian residents Although there seems now a $US apex fare for 21 day advance purchase on IA with discounts varying between 16-23% on the fares I checked. Its not clear how these auctions work.
Spicejet has just launched their online booking system. They were advertising domestic tickets for as low as Rs. 99 ! The site is really good and heavily loaded.
Realistically speaking, you may manage to get good deals for around Rs. 500 on a Bangalore-Delhi ticket, which is still awesome. Of course, it's too early to say how reliable they are, or to comment on the quality of service. But if they can get you from point A to point B so cheaply, thenits not that bothering.
For those who know RyanAir or the local version, Air Deccan, the ticket is similar, i.e. a computer printout. One thing unique to Spicejet is the ability to book your seat beforehand on the internet. That's nicer than the scramble for seats in every Air Deccan flight.
