subject: Crazy Collectibles Of The 5 Most Expensive Yachts [print this page]

Now just about everywhere you look you are sure to find dozens of articles listing the most expensive luxury yachts of the year. Luxury yacht sales play little part here, these graceful toys of the sea were not just bought, but custom made to the specifications of some of the wealthiest men in the world. As such we are not only going to discuss just their rankings by price, but also the oft times eccentric and incredible additions to each vessel. You may think that this author is coming across as somewhat jealous and you would be quite right as we delve into the:

5 Most Amazing Luxury Yachts of 2010

5th - The Rising Sun

The Rising Sun rests in the grateful hands of Oracles Larry Elisson and record executive extraordinaire David Geffen. At an impressive 453 feet the yacht doesn't lack for space and does not waste any either. Onboard this seafaring pleasure palace you would find jacuzzi equipped bathrooms, a gym/spa/sauna combo, an apparently well stocked wine cellar and a private cinema. With 82 rooms available who needs to sleep in the same bed twice?

Manufactured by - Lurssen in Bremen

Designed by - Jon Bannenberg

Cost: $200 Million

4th - The Octopus

Co-Founder of Microsoft, Paul Allen is the proud owner of 416 feet of luxury yacht in the form of the Octopus. He and his guests are attended by a staff contingent of 40 people but that is not the best part. Seven smaller boats are lodged in the onboard garage and two helicopters are there as air support, should they need to make a run into Bosnia. The ten man submarine does not hurt either.

Manufactured by - Lurssen in Bremen

Designed by - Jonathan Quinn Barnett

Cost - $200 Million

3rd - The Lady Moura

Yacht management is no problem for Nasser al-Rashid of Rashid Engineering since he maintains around 60 crew members to swab the deck and occasionally push the beached Lady Moura back into the water when it gets too intimate with the Cannes coastline. At 344 feet, the mega yacht apparently has some trouble in certain harbours but why worry about that when you have your own beach resort onboard? You read correctly, the Lady Moura carries the beach around with it, palm trees and all.

Manufactured by - Blohm and Voss

Designed by - Luigi Sturchio, Diana Yacht Design

Cost - $210 Million

2nd - The Dubai

Absolute monarch of Dubai and Prime Minister/Vice President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum sometimes forgets where his house is so he bought this megalith and gave it the same name, so he is always in the right place. This vessel is a manufacturing marvel and can manage not only 88 crew members, but an additional 115 guests. At 524 feet, it contains fancy offices, an atrium and a rather impressive spiral glass staircase which makes you want to disco as the light hits it from above. The helipad and small submarine are impressive and by all accounts so is the AC which was designed to handle Middle Eastern heat waves.

Manufactured by - Blohm + Voss and Lurssen

Designed by - Philippe Starck (unconfirmed)

Cost - $350 Million

1st - The Eclipse

Roman Abramovich, the famous owner of Chelsea Football Club, owns the keys to the most obscenely expensive and somewhat militant luxury yacht in the world, possibly the universe. At 560 feet it is the Titanic of the industry and sports 24 guest cabins. They could more than likely have had a great deal more but the space distribution, in terms of yacht management, would have been tricky with those two helicopter pads and two swimming pools. A party is never complete without a disco hall so you would find that as well hot tubs and three launch boats, not to mention the submarine in the basement.

But there is no point in having all of this if you can defend it from World War 3, so guests will find themselves eased by the presence of bullet-proof glass and armour plating around the bridge. Not much good against the regular missile attacks suffered by luxury yachts these days you say? Not a problem! The Eclipse operates with a German-built missile defence system and anti-intrusion security. There are also rumours that trying to take a shot with your camera will get a you singed retina as the paparazzi shield lasers sweep the area for charged-couple devices (CCD).

Manufactured by - Blohm + Voss

Designed by - Hermidas Atabeyki

Cost - $1.2 Billion

In terms of luxury yacht sales, the Eclipse is number one for relaxation or running black ops into enemy territory.
