subject: Front Door Makeovers That Say Welcome Home [print this page]

In order to update the look of your front door and give it a fresh new style that visitors can admire, it may be time to consider a front door make over. Because this is often one of the first things people see, it is important to personalize this entrance and tailor your changes to reflect your personal style.

Create a Door That is Spic and Span

Although this may seem like a no-brainer, it is all too easy to become accustomed to the dirt and grime on your front door and overlook cobwebs and dead leaves near the entry. Also, if you do not use your front door because you tend to enter through the garage or side entrance, you may fail to notice the cracks and imperfections in the paint that are crying out for restoration.

Choose a Color

To give your front door the curb appeal it deserves, either give it a fresh coat in the same color it currently has, or choose a new color to update a drab, lackluster look. A popular color choice is one that plays against your house color, or a vivid black or red hue that makes the front door pop.

Modernize the Hardware

Replace hinges, door knob, entry knocker, and door bell surround for starters. Most home decor stores offer a wide range of silver, gold, pewter, and bronze surfaces to choose from.

Personalize the Entry

You may want to personalize you space by placing a garland, or other appropriate door display that uses natural dried grapevine or flowers to announce your individual style. Art and craft stores provide a wide assortment of materials that can be swapped out to mirror the appropriate seasonal changes.

Change out a Glass Panel

There are many different ways to update the current glass panels in your doors with new ones that can add and shine and reflect light, as well as offer a punch of color. You can change the type of glass you have and go for one that has a more classic design, or get very fancy and go for a colored or stained glass piece instead.

Incorporate the Entire Entryway

The area leading up to your front door, including the front porch if you have one, should uplift and compliment the entire design style. You can draw the eye forward by using flowers and plants to anchor the space, or maybe add a bench or small cafe style table and chair set that is uncluttered and in keeping with the overall feel you are trying to create.

Doorknob Accent Pieces

If you wish to provide an added touch, and draw further attention to the doorknob, you can make it your own with the use of a hanging accent piece. This may take the form of dried flowers anchored in the manner of your choice, or even a small wind chime that will look beautiful and create a soft noise if the door is opened.

Modernize the Light Fixture

If you decide to use the light you currently have, make sure that it is properly secured to the wall and free from loose wires, burned out bulbs and broken glass. Also, give it a good cleaning to match the rest of the area. If you replace it, take into account the design of your house and your recent updates so that you can purchase one that provides the perfect finishing touch.
