In the early 1800's, milling machines were used for filing down metal components consistently. For years milling machines did not change. Not until 1861 did Brown and Sharpe modify milling machines so they traveled in the x,y,z axis. In the 1980's computer technology was integrated into the milling machine and automated its several processes. It also improved operational accuracy and consistency. Over the years, milling machines have become a staple of machine shops and are used for many operations. Spindle repair and other maintenance of the machine will be decided on only after inspecting it regularly by the operators. It is good to have an understanding of the different parts of the milling machine so that its operation, handling and maintenance can be properly made.

Head

The head is the main top component of manual milling machine. To find the spindle and motor, look in this part. The head is responsible for transforming electrical power to mechanical energy used for the spindle.

Motor

The motor generates the electrical power needed for the spindle. The spindle is rotated by the belt-driven system when it operates. Depending on the gear being used, the speed of the rotation can vary between the range of 50 and beyond 4000 RPM.

Spindle

The cutting tool is connected to the spindle. If you make some changes in the spindle, it can be made to turn in any direction.

Drive system

The head can be found in the drive system. It also allows the rotational speed of the spindle and subsequently the cutting mechanism to be altered by the milling machine operator.

Quill

The component that keeps the spindle in place is known as quill. The movement goes up and down and can be operated with the quill feed. Using the quill feed's hand wheel, the quill can be repositioned vertically. Also the quill has a lock so different types of materials can be trimmed the same size at one time.

Work table

Put the production pieces on the work surface. It has slot components that are utilized for fastening the work pieces in plate. The X, Y or Z direction is used to move the production, on the work table. The X direction is a left to right, horizontal change. A front to back movement is the Y direction while the Z direction involves moving the piece up and down. To improve flexibility during cutting process, the work table may be modified into many configurations. The worktable can be replaced horizontally either from left to right or from right to left, thanks to the longitudinal movable hand wheel equipped with it. Conversely, you can move the work table in and out by using the traverse hand wheel. The worktable may be moved upward and downward together with other milling machine parts such as the saddle and knee using the vertical movement crank.

Due to their technical significance, the various parts of milling machines have to be maintained properly and repairs should be made immediately when needed.
