subject: Using Decorative Mirrors To Give The Fireplace A Facelift [print this page]

Most people ignore the fireplace when decorating their home interior. They think that since the fireplace is just used for heating the household in a cold weather, it doesnt require much attention. The truth is that the fireplace should be decorated as much as you decorate the other areas of your house. With nothing but a picture frame hanging on the wall above it, it probably looks dull and boring. Using mirrors to decorate the fireplace is a perfect way to give it a facelift.

Set up a huge mirror with decorative frames on the fireplace to transform its look into a totally different one. Make sure that you choose a mirror with bold stylish frames to match with the frame of the fireplace itself. For example, if your fireplace is made from oak wood, look for a mirror with frames made from oak or other woods with similar texture as well.

Try a more theatrical approach by hanging two large mirrors with similar sizes. The reason why you need large mirrors is for the entire space from the fireplace up to the ceiling is completely covered. For a more fabulous effect, try layering two mirrors. After setting up first a large mirror, take a smaller mirror having a one of a kind frame style and float it on top of the larger one. This is kind of tricky but the result is worth the effort.

You can also try a mosaic setup as well. Simply take six small mirrors having the same shape and size and line them on the wall. While rectangular mirrors are the best choice for this kind of style, you can still look for other shapes as long as they can form one large mirror in the end. You can even play with the designs by mixing and matching frame colors.

Mirrors are perfect as standalone decors. However, if you want to spice things up, you can make use of secondary items. Secondary items are decorative accessories that you can use as accompaniments for your main decorative piece, which in this case is the mirror. The perfect accompaniments for a large mirror are decorative picture frames and porcelain dish. Have them arranged at a clear surface underneath the mirror.

It is always ideal to use decorative pieces that complement the main subject. This will help you achieve balance especially if you are new to decorating. It is still up to you to divert from this path however. As long as the results are pleasing to eye, nothing is absolutely wrong in doing so.
