subject: Refinishing Bedroom Furniture To Make It Appear New [print this page]

Furniture that has been worn out over time can ruin the looks of your bedroom, so whether you like it or not, you will have to either replace it with a new one, or refinish it to restore its original state. The latter seems to be the better idea given that you wont have to let out extra cash just to refinish a furniture. You will need, however, some carpentry skills and knowledge on how to use basic power tools and painting materials.

Have the furniture moved to the workroom to begin refinishing. If there are parts that do not need any working, have them covered with plastic to prevent damage. The workroom floor has to be covered up too to prevent it from being ruined by liquid chemicals. If you find it hard to move the furniture from the room, make sure you also apply the necessary precaution of covering the floor and walls before proceeding.

To protect your eyes and your hands, wear goggles and hand gloves. This is important as you dont want chemical from getting into your eyes and irritating your skin. Apply a chemical stripper on the area you want to refinish and allow it to settle for a few minutes. After that, strip off the old coating using a knife. Clean the furniture from stain thoroughly before sanding it.

Next, using sandpaper, smooth the surface of the furniture manually. Use a sandpaper that is 150-grit for the first time and finish it off with a 220-grit for the final smoothing. If youre quite comfortable using a power sander, use it. Just be careful when working with power tools as they can do damage both to you and to the furniture you are working on.

You are going to need a rug or a soft brush when applying the final coating. Tarnish the surface of the furniture with the shade or color of your choosing. After a few strokes and after achieving the shade that you want for the furniture, polish the exterior with polyurethane. Sand the area in between coats for better results. Wait until the polish has totally dried before moving it back inside the bedroom.

For furniture with metal parts, spray painting may be a brilliant idea to give the furniture a different look. Or, you can simply polish the metal parts to restore their shine. Finally, replace the furnitures busted if there are any.
