subject: How Can I Be Sure That I Pick A Good Surgeon For My Liposuction? [print this page]

There's a lot of buzz going around the internet about liposuction (also called lipoplasty and suction lipectomy). Some people are sharing horror stories about lipoplasties gone horribly wrong. Other people claim that the surgery can give amazing and transformative results. Both groups of people tend to have pictoral evidence for their claims.

In fact, lipoplasty can give all kinds of results. In some cases, if there are unfortunate complications, then there can be results that are aesthetically unpleasing. In some cases, there are amazing results that look natural, beautiful and healthy. And a number of cases fall in the middle, giving results that range somewhere between mediocre and decent.

So, what makes the difference? What causes someone to get bad, ok or good results from their liposuction? Although there are a number of factors, one of the single most important things that will determine the success of a surgery is the choice of the surgeon.

Although even good surgeons can make mistakes, a properly qualified and extremely experienced surgeon will have a much better rate of success than one who is less skilled. In many cases, a patient's choice of which surgeon performs their lipoplasty can be much more important than choices of which liposuction technique they use.

The ideal surgeon is both technically skilled and has an artistic eye. He or she has performed a large number of successful surgeries, so you know that you aren't being the guinea pig. He or she has the ability to know how to accentuate and improve the natural beauty of your body and the surgical skill to bring about that vision.

So, than, how does one pick a good surgeon? When selecting a lipectomy surgeon, the first thing one should know is to take one's time. Don't feel like you have to make your decision overnight. Take time to shop around and investigate a number of surgeons in your area, and perhaps a few outside of your immediate vicinity.

See if you can find reviews of the surgeon's work. Do his or her patients seem to be happy or upset for the most part?

Look at as many before and after pictures as you possibly can. This is one of the best ways for you to understand visually the sort of work that a doctor performs. If you don't see before and after pictures that you like, you probably have a different aesthetic goal than the doctor. The results that you get from your liposuction may be worse than what you see in the before and after pictures, but it will likely not be better.

However, do not make any final decisions until after you have had a consultation with your surgeon. You can learn as much or more during your consultation than in all the rest of your research combined.
