What a great time of the year! Visiting with relatives and friends that you have not seen in a long time, seeing children open presents and cooking great meals that everyone looks forward to! Sometimes, though, it can be difficult to stay away from foods that are high in fats and sugar. Much of our holiday food is lacking nutrition! This food can be tempting but can lead to cravings, which leads to gaining unwanted pounds!!
Here are a few easy, but favorite food ideas for the holidays that are higher in nutrition and taste great:
1. An idea for an appetizer: Try slicing fresh mozzerella cheese (drained from the water it is packaged in), and put them on small pieces of a good, whole grain bread (toasted or fresh) along with a slice of tomato. Then top with fresh basil leaves, a bit of sea salt, olive oil and pepper to taste. Again, a delicious, nutritious snack that is not loaded with processed ingredients, salt and sugar.
2. For a holiday meal: Grill a lean steak that has been marinated in good season's dressing for a few hours. The dressing should be prepared with olive oil. Marinate asparagus in another bowl with the same kind of dressing and add to the grill after steak has been flipped to finish cooking the second side. Serve with tossed salad, and wild rice. You are getting important minerals and nutrients from lean meat, two to four servings of vegetables, and a whole grain, with no processed, unhealthy foods!
3. Desert Alternative: Try serving a big fruit salad along with the pies candy and cookies. They will offer another choice to people who are sick of all of the sugar! You will add a couple of servings of your daily, required intake of fruits with this dish.
Eating healthy during the holidays requires a little more planning and preparation but it is worth it. Your energy levels will increase, you will not have as many sugar cravings, and even your digestion will improve!
