Tramadol is similar to morphine in terms of mechanism of action. However, this drug is actually a man-made or synthetic pain reliever or analgesic and is not classified as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
The narcotic-like, Tramadol is a synthetic or man-made pain reliever that works similar to morphine. This analgesic is known under its brand names, Ultram and Ultram ER. Just like morphine, Tramadol works by binding to opioid receptors in your brain. These receptors play an important role in the transmission of pain sensation throughout your body.
Though not a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), this medication is prone to abuse. But unlike NSAIDs, it does not increase your risk of internal bleeding or stomach ulceration.
Important Information
Tramadol is a prescription drug that is available in immediate and extended release tablets. The drug is used to manage moderate to severe pain. The extended release tablets in dosages of 100 milligrams, 200 milligrams and 300 milligrams are prescribed for medium to severe chronic pain.
For immediate release tablet, the recommended dose is 50 milligrams to 100 milligrams every 4 to 6 hours or as needed. Tolerance is highly improved if you start your dosage at 25 milligrams per day.
Drug Interactions:
Tramadol, if combined with carbamazepine such as Tegretol, Equetro, Carbatrol and Tegretol ER, lessens its effects due to an increase inactivation in the body. Tramadol concentration in the body increases by 50 percent to 60 percent and reduces its inactivation if you take it in combination with quinidine. Severe side effects such as serotonin syndrome or seizure may occur if you take Tramadol together with selective serotonin inhibitors or monoamine oxidase inhibitors.
Anesthetics, narcotics, sedative hypnotics, tranquilizers and alcohol can activate Tramadol to increase respiratory and central nervous system depression.
Side Effects:
Tramadol side effects are usually transient. Common side effects reported by users include constipation, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, headache and vomiting. There are also patients who complained of itching, dry mouth, rash, visual disturbances, diarrhea and vertigo. Do not attempt to stop taking the medication without consulting your doctor first.
