Icelandic Horse Riding in Beautiful Lapland

Horse riding in Lapland during the winter months is not something that immediately springs to mind when thinking about a holiday in Lapland. Father Christmas, Reindeer rides and the magic of Christmas are usually the activities on the top of the list but Horse riding has to be one of the most magical activities to get involved in whilst in Lapland

Lapland's Icelandic Horses are sweet natured, strong and great for hiking out in the forests of Lapland where you can enjoy the ride on these gentle creatures but also get to see the wonderful scenery and breathtaking snow covered forests of Lapland. The months of January and May provide a great opportunity to go out into the forests of Lapland for 3-4 hours, stopping off on the way for a hot drink and a rest.

The trips cater for all abilities and the guides will be more than happy to cater for those with little experience of horses and riding. For those that have little experience shorter trips are better, especially for the children. All of the activity centres will provide warm clothing and boots to ensure that you enjoy the trip as much as possible.

You may think it can be a little tricky riding in the deep snow but there are designated tracks in which to stick to and the guides and instructors know the area well and will guide you through the beautiful scenery. Horse riding is also popular during the summer months where the scenery changes quite considerably to the winter months.

Lapland Icelandic horses are well suited to the climate and are completely at ease with trekking through the snow covered forests and actually enjoy their ride out. Once you have had your refreshments, you will head back to camp where the horses will be taken for a well earned rest and many places will allow you to see where the horses are kept when they are not out in the forests of Lapland. The horses are normally kept on farms where there are lots of other animals to see and feed and this activity is really good for the children who will not only love the horse riding but love seeing and feeding all of the other animals too.

Lapland has many surprises in store and it is good to get out there and see what is on offer alongside the other popular trips.
