subject: Is Losing Weight During The Winter Really That Difficult? [print this page]

There are several common misconceptions about healthy living and weight loss.

Living in a city, for example, is regularly seen as being something which can have a negative impact on your weight loss, as due to the fact everyone seems so busy with their hectic work schedules and their now booming social life, eating healthily and getting regular exercise isn't an option (the truth is that with just a little planning, living in the city can be just as healthy - if not more so - than living anywhere else).

And one of the most common misconceptions is that trying to lose weight in the winter is extremely difficult.

With the cold weather meaning you very rarely spend a lot of time outside, the dark nights minimizing your motivation to exercise, whether that's to go to a gym in Manchester or out for a jog on an evening and your seemingly regular need to eat food that's full of carbohydrates and fats to keep you warm throughout the day, it's almost the complete opposite to summer in every way, which includes in terms of losing weight, too.

At least, that's what many believe.

However, just like with living in the city, whilst losing weight is undoubtedly easier in the summer, as you want to spend more time out doors and are more motivated to lose weight so that you look good in your bikini or swimming shorts (plus, barbecuing food is a particularly healthy way to cook), losing weight in the winter is easily achievable and it just requires for you to set aside some time to decide how.

Let's start by looking at your diet.

By the time November comes around, it's highly likely that you've ditched the salads for lunch and are opting for sandwiches, pastry-based foods and sweet, sugary products to give you a boost throughout the afternoon.

And whilst these are no doubt tasty, they're not particularly healthy.

For the most part, it isn't the food itself that people are overly bothered about in the winter, however - it's the need for it to keep them warm and full.

The perfect answer?

Soup.

Easy to make and extremely versatile, homemade soup is not only a cheap way to feed a family for numerous meals, but it's also hearty, healthy and will keep you warm and full for hours.

The area that many people fall down on during winter in terms of healthy living is exercise, as there can seem like no better way to spend an evening or weekend than curled up on the sofa, in the warm, watching TV.

The best way to combat this is to pencil some exercise time into your diary and treat it like everything else that needs to be done, like going to work or food shopping.

What's important to remember is that you don't necessarily have to go to, for instance, a gym in Manchester during this time - although there's no doubt that would help the process - but as long as you're exercising in some way, you should continue to see weight loss during the winter months.

Losing weight during winter often isn't as easy as it is in summer, but it's also not as difficult as most are making it out to be. Plan well, prepare your meals and workout sessions and keep your goals in mind and you'll find your healthy living lifestyle is maintained from autumn right through to spring.
