subject: Ways To Prevent Hypertension [print this page]

If there is one medical condition you shouldnt take for granted, its hypertension. Also known to all as high blood pressure, hypertension is the one of the factors that increases the risk for heart failure, stroke and aneurism. Hypertension can be considered as a hidden disease and is chronic most of the time.

The most common way to prevent hypertension is through healthy eating. Certain types of food can contribute to a high blood pressure and those are the foods you have to avoid or eliminate. Such foods are high in salt and fat. Stick instead to foods that are rich in fiber and antioxidants like fresh fruits and green and leafy vegetables.

Though theres nothing really wrong with drinking alcoholic beverages occasionally, you should watch out against daily alcohol consumption. Though its not yet clear how alcohol can cause hypertension, there are some links between the two. This may be due to the fact that a large percentage of alcohol turn into fat when consumed, and fat as we all know can directly cause constriction in the blood vessels.

Another vice that you should quit is smoking. Smoking isnt only dangerous to your lungs but to the rest of your body as well. A link has been found between nicotine, the substance contained in tobacco smoke, and constriction of blood vessels. Experts also say that smokers add 15 more years to their lives if they quit smoking now.

Research has proven that there is a strong connection between stress and hypertension. That means by simply getting rid of stress, you can greatly cut down your risk for developing high blood pressure. You can do that through stress-busting activities such as exercise along with getting enough rest and having a well-balanced diet.

Since hypertension has no symptoms, the best way to prevent it is through early detection. Have your blood pressure checked on a regular basis so that you will have a higher chance against hypertension. Dont hesitate to set up an appointment with your doctor once every three months and have yourself checked for other common health concerns as well.
