1. Go Where The Money Is

This one is a no-brainer. If you're selling popsicles in the Arctic, you're going to fail. It is imperative that you know your audience, and that you're constantly following the feedback you should actively be soliciting. Once you have that part down, you can then target any re-investment of profits more effectively, maximizing the return on your effort.

2. Build a List

Whether it's an email campaign, a direct-mail (leaflets, etc.) campaign, or a door to door blitz, it's absolute insanity not to collect the information on your customers / leads. Why? Well, it's simple. Would you rather build up a good sized list of customers whom you know to be responsive, or chase new customers day in & day out? I thought so!

3. Build a Buzz

This has nothing to do with a killer party, and everything to do with positioning. Video game publishers do this really well; you know a video game is coming out months before it ever hits the shelves, and by the time it does, it's snapped up like water in the desert. Take heed, and profit!

4. Take a Lesson from the Criminal Community

First, you don't want to land in jail, so behave! But let me ask you something: How many times have you heard of drug dealers offering the first taste for free? Whether you agree with their lifestyle or not, you can't deny their good sense. Drop previews of your product, get people on board with it, and once you have them hooked with a quality, free version, introduce them to the paid version that will blow their mind!
