Mauritius is a little island state in the Indian Ocean. The Mauritian folks are multi-cultural, both in ethnic origin and in religion. The majority of the early tourist development was in the north. Grand Baie was the first area to experience the traveller boom. There are however masses of things for touriststo do and see all around the island, and in the interior. The best Mauritius hotels include Legends, which is at Grande Gaube in the north west, plus Les Pavillons, which presents five star luxury on the La Morne Peninsula, in the south west.

Inhabited in the 17th century

Arab, Malay and African sailors knew the location of Mauritius from perhaps the tenth century, but the island remained uninhabited until the 17th century. Western european rulers were the Dutch, then the French, and then the English, until independence was gained in 1968. During the colonial period many African slaves were brought to Mauritius, where they worked in the sugar plantations. Their descendants ( Creoles ) now form a huge part of the people.

After slavery was annulled other groups worked in the plantations including Indians and Chinese, whose descendants also still live in Mauritius. This complex history has led on to a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society. Creoles, Indo-Mauritians, Sino-Mauritians and Franco-Mauritians are the largest racial groupings. Hinduism is the religion of a little over 1/2 the inhabitants, followed by Christianity ( generally RC ), and Islam. English is the official language, but French is spoken more frequently in the mass media and in business, while for many standard folk their language is Mauritian Creole. Most of the people who work in the holiday maker industry can speak a tiny English.

The holiday maker industry in Mauritius has advanced noticeably in recent times. The very first major developments were in the north, where Grand Baie is now a hugeshopping, leisure and entertaining centre. There are several cafes, restaurants , bars and discos in this busy resort.

The classy Legend resort is at Grande Gaube, not too far away from Grand Baie. The resort, of which nestles around a tranquil cove and lagoon, has 25 apartments and almost 70 other rooms. The Emperor Villa here has a personal beach.

Western and eastern specials

There will be 4 eateries and 2 bars / lounges for the guests at Legends. The shore bar and grill, La Bastide, is open for lunch only. In the evenings one has the Karma House, serving a fusion menu of western and eastern cuisine, and the Abalone, concentrating on sea food.

The glamorous Les Pavillons

Another luxury Mauritius cafe is located at the opposite side of the island, on La Morne headland. Les Pavillons is a 5 star enterprise, with just about 150 rooms. La Morne Promontory is a Global heritage preservation site, and from the resort one has perspectives of the majestic Morne Brabant mountain.
