A rarity even within its own scenic landscapes the Mountain Baxian National Nature Reserve is a natural sanctuary that is as expansive as its seamless boundaries. Located in the north of China and steeped in folklore and local legend it is believed that the idyllic terrains of the reserve once captivated eight fairies who were so enchanted by the venue that they stopped over for a drink of water by a rock. This rock was later dubbed "Baxian (eight fairies) Table" and the landscapes surrounding it, Mount Baxian. In fact scientists and researchers believe that Mount Baxian is theXishuang Banna found in Chinese folklore especially since such forest terrains are a topographical and geographical oddity in the northern region of China.

Ideally positioned on the southern incline of Yanshan Mountain northeast of Jixian County in Tianjin the sanctuary is also located beside Cuiping Lake to the south with Wuling Mountain to its north. Facing the Qing Dynasty's Easter Royal Tombs in the east with breathtaking Huangya Guan Great Wall to the west, the reserve is located within a virtual triangle shaped by Xinglong County, Ji County and Zunhun County.
