The life of the entertainer is no joke. They work long hours, get low pay and are expected to show up day-in and day-out. My cousin once worked as a part of a group of clowns in Boston MA. They were part of a traveling circus that went around the country to different states and stop by to do performances for anybody who wanted to see their show. In her travels she has met so many interesting people who entertained people for a living as well.
She would tell me stories about people who worked as magicians in Boston. They would perform street magic and illusions much like those performed by celebrity magicians like David Blaine or Criss Angel, and like any good magician, they never divulged their secrets. She would sometimes go with them in their usual rounds to perform on the sidewalks and there, she learned the art of entertainment. The trick is, she told me, is to control the audiences attention. Once you have gained control of their interest, it will be easy to execute your illusion. Have them focus on one thing while you perform your deception. Sometimes, the fact that they are trying to uncover your ruse is the thing that will help you perform the trick.
Going with them on their travels, she would also meet another kind of entertainer. Some would find other interesting ways to entertain the crowd like the caricature artists in Boston who find creative ways to draw passersby on the sidewalks and parks. In a minute, they would finish a likeness of yourself that truly captures your essence. It takes only one look she said. We may not be aware of it, but we constantly broadcast how we are really like with our body language even if we dont speak at all. Most of the time, what comes out of your mouth would be the opposite of what your body is telling.
Another type of entertainer would be the celebrity impersonator. These are the people who would make the crowd laugh by trying to mimic certain celebrities. They would copy everything from the hairstyle to the accessories and when they come out on stage they would look like the spitting image of the celebrity they are trying to copy. Some are even mistaken to be the person they are trying to copy. In that case, they would just pretend that they are them and gracefully sign autographs and have their pictures taken. Event planners in MA would hire celebrity impersonators in Boston for their parties. The very good ones would get called back and some would even get hired for a comedy talk show on TV which was considered as hitting the big time in their circles.
She also told me about other comedians she met along the way. There were good ones, some bad ones and then there are the great ones. On the streets and in comedy bars you will find so many hopefuls that sometimes she thought that it was really kind of sad that not all of them would make it. Some of them looked very strange maybe as part of their comedic act but if they bombed during their shows, they would only look pathetic and pitiful. It is sad she said that they would devote their whole lives to the art and not even get appreciated for their efforts. As one of them she would always clap for them sometimes the only one clapping in the crowd, but she always gave them a round of applause because she knows firsthand what its like to be an entertainer.
