subject: Gifts To Buy For Those Tricky People [print this page] We all have at least one person in our lives who is impossible to buy for. Their birthday comes around and we find ourselves at a stand still. What do you get for the person who has everything, or who criticizes everything, or who in some other way seems impossible.
1. A book:
While a book seems like it might be a boring gift, the truth is it's the furthest thing from it. First of all, it suits everyone, no matter what your taste, there's got to be something you're interested in and therefore might want to read more about. If you're really at a loss as to whether this person likes fantasy or literary fiction, then go for a nice non-fiction, hardcover coffee table book. This way even if they don't enjoy it, their guests will.
2. A picture frame or album:
Everyone has a picture that they need to frame, and even if they don't they should find one so that their home doesn't look so bare. A nice silver picture frame goes with everything, as does a nice wooden one. If a picture frame somehow feels too personal or not right then maybe go for a wall frame. Better yet get them a cool poster to put in it.
3. A gift card:
While these feel like very impersonal gifts (because they are), like money they are sometimes exactly what a person actually wants. Instead of opening a sweater they have to pretend they like and then feel bad for returning, why not just give them the money to go choose something for themselves. Gift cards are almost better than money in that with money, we always feel an obligation to save, or somehow be responsible. A gift card however implies, 'go, spend, treat yourself to something nice, on me'.
4. A trip:
Okay a trip to the Bahamas might be a bit out of your price range, but a hot air balloon trip probably isn't! This is the type of gift few people will think to buy for themselves, so treat them to it! Better yet get them two tickets and go with them, or have them take a friend or loved one. It's an unforgettable experience and a chance to do something a bit fun, and a bit different.
You see there are ways to get around the impossible. Other options include stocking stuffer type gifts like a journal, a new scarf or the perfect winter toque. Get creative, think a bit outside of the box, or don't and play it safe.
