subject: Getting Around Sydney [print this page]

Sydney is the capital of New South Wales and is home to the largest population out of all Australian cities. Millions of visitors from other countries come here each year to enjoy the city's great attractions, the nice beach, the sweet weather, and the low key atmosphere which is usually not found in urban areas.

It is easy to get around Sydney if you learn a few simple rules. Keep in mind that the city has several large landmarks that can guide you through the urban area. If you want to enjoy some great entertainment at The Rocks, you just have to spot Harbor Bridge and the Opera House, because the nightlife district is basically situated between these major attractions. The easiest way to get there is through the business district, on its east end you will find the King's Cross and on its west end the Darling Harbor.

Undoubtedly, the greatest attraction in the city is Sydney Harbor. It also is referred to as Port Jackson, and houses the even more famous Opera House showcasing Sydney's iconic image around the globe. The port divides the city between north and south, the north housing the residential area while the south is bustling with commercial activities. If you like a bit of adventure, you can use the bridge to go from north to south or vice verse; the bridge stands over 500 meters above the waters and the views are really fantastic.

Before you can travel to Sydney, you need to take care of your accommodation. It is strongly recommended to book your hotel room prior to your visit, even if there are plenty of hotel rooms to go around if you leave for Sydney at the last minute. Once you arrive at the airport, make sure to pay a visit to the friendly people at the New South Wales Tourist Center that will guide you through the check in process for the accommodation of your choosing.

It is very easy to get around the city if you choose to travel on water. There are plenty of ferries that can take you to many places in Sydney. If you have plenty of cash with you and you do not mind splurging a little, you purchase a ride on a water taxi and take in the city views.

Road traffic is bad, and the same as in other crowded urban areas around the world. It is very hard to find a parking space and traffic can be a nightmare. As a general rule, do not forget that in Australia you drive on the left side of the road.

A more convenient way that will take you to your destination hassle free is the CityRail. For a $3 fare, you will be able to go places without having to fight the rush hour squeeze. The rails never stop and they are very popular because of their convenience.

If you do not mind a little bit of exercise, you can also visit Sydney using your own two feet. As all the city landmarks and attractions are situated in a fairly squeezed area you will encounter no problems if you want to visit them by foot.
