Happy Thanksgiving From PeopleFinders

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 25, 2010. At PeopleFinders, we love this holiday. It's the perfect time for family and friends to come together and share.

On Thanksgiving Day, people share their favorite televised events, bountiful meals and an array of amusing activities. More importantly, they share personal stories, hopes and dreams. They share their lives.

The First Thanksgiving

In 1621 a group of colonists planned a feast to celebrate prosperity. Although their journey from England was filled with danger and disaster, the pilgrims learned to grow crops and survive in their new home. They were taught by members of the Wampanoag tribe, many of whom joined them for a grand autumn feast.

The meal they enjoyed so long ago became known as the first Thanksgiving. Since then, the fourth Thursday in November has come to represent a time of giving thanks. President George Washington understood the importance of this occasion, and decreed the first official Thanksgiving in 1789. Other Presidents followed his lead, but it didn't become a national holiday until 1863. It was President Abraham Lincoln who ensured Thanksgiving would be celebrated annually in the United States.

Thanksgiving Today

Today's "traditional" Thanksgiving menu includes several items that weren't served at that first meal. Their feast consisted of fowl, venison, fish, corn and many other delicious dishes. Turkey, however, was not. They also weren't able to create the desserts we often take for granted today. Cakes, pies and other tasty treats were not available. The colonists had all but exhausted their supply of sugar.

These days people gather together to watch parades and sports, socialize and enjoy their own magnificent feasts. As you sit down to a bounty of foods this Thanksgiving, don't forget to thank the people who prepared your meal. They work hard to create exquisite banquets for their guests.
