An Alternative to Prescription Drugs: Acupuncture

People all around the world are being diagnosed with a variety of physical and mental ailments every year. In about 99% of the cases, these patients are given routine prescription medications for their treatment, which according to many, is an indispensable' way of living. Though there are many side-effects to these drugs, people depend on them as their savior. Whatever their ailments may be whether it is a common infection or a major depression a variety of drugs are used by the patients from Erythromycin to Zoloft. But many of them fail to realize that there is an alternative method to using prescription drugs the acupuncture therapy. There are good grounds for trying out this therapy, too.

But unfortunately, the acupuncture therapy lacks deep research and studies. The University of Arizona conducted a double-blind study in 1998 to prove the effectiveness of acupuncture. This study divided patients suffering from Depression into two groups. While one group was administered prescription drugs and psychotherapy, the other group was treated with acupuncture therapy. The result was, patients treated with acupuncture found most of their Depression symptoms relieved.

Despite this result, there have been no large studies or good research pointed towards this arena. More light should be shed on this research, so that the Western Society and America embrace this therapy and incorporate it into their treatment for a variety of illnesses and diseases.

One problem which arises in the minds of people about replacing prescription drugs with acupuncture is, the prescription drugs are based on science. Their effects can be clearly measured by monitoring the patient's body, whereas the effects of acupuncture are not readily measurable. So, the Western Society is not willing to explore the unknown.

But it is a fact that thousands of people in the Western Society are becoming more aware of the acupuncture therapy, and started experiencing them personally. If more research and fund money is directed to this, it is for sure that acupuncture therapy will eventually replace prescription drugs in future. Though people trying out this therapy are not assured of 100% benefits, they can be assured of 100% safety of this therapy.
