As the host of a party, it is partially your responsibility to ensure that the guests have a great time at the party. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to throw a great party. Here are the ones I've noticed to be the most important:
1. Location, location, location. You want to pick a location for a party that has enough space and is properly designed and equipped for the kind of party you have in mind, and for the number of people you want to invite.
2. Make it look like a party. Whichever place you choose for the party, decorate it and make it look like a party place. There are thousands of decorative objects you can choose from. Put an emphasis on adding a lot of color and making the place as inviting as possible. If when the quests arrive, the immediately start thinking about having an awesome time, chance are that they will.
3. Invite the right people. You may know a lot of people, but it is not advised to invite them all just because you know them. Different people have different tastes and like different types of parties. So, if for example you'll throw a party with loud music and lots of passionate dancing, make sure that you invite people who enjoy such a party. Match the guests with the party and the guests among them.
4. Introduce and socialize people. As the host, make sure that everybody at the party knows everybody else (unless it's a really huge party). In particular, introduce to each other the people you believe have the most in common, and kickoff conversations. Pay special attention to those people who tend to be a bit shier than the rest.
5. Surprise people. A key element that differentiates a great party from a good party is the fact it takes people by surprise (in a good way). Put your creativity to work and add to the party some marvelous surprises. A friend of mine for example, brought a mascot to a party. Everybody was entertained by that.
Last but not least, keep in mind that a party is not only for the other people, it's for yourself as well. So make sure you also have a great time.
