The latest report released by the Government on the limits to skilled and highly skilled migrant workers seeking to enter the UK from outside the European Union has caused quite a stir in the UK business community.
David Metcalf, the chairman of the migration advisory committee has said, "It is not possible to reduce net migration to the tens of thousands by limiting work-related migration alone. The Committee assumes that work-related migration takes 20% of the total cut, its fair share, which implies that family and student migration must take the other 80%".
David Frost, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said "Any Government moves to reduce immigration must not harm the UK's competitiveness".
The migration advisory committee went on to say that to achieve the target the Government has set will mean thousands fewer visas for skilled workers. UK industry needs to still allow global talent into the UK to maintain business competiveness and we must still prioritise those who have a clear job offer over those who don't. All the evidence suggests that allowing skilled migrants in to the UK has a positive economic contribution to UK businesses.
"Open for business" is the statement released by the Prime Minister and our migration polices must reflect this statement.
