Srinagar: Big Boss, a TV reality Show has come under a heavy criticism from the civil society members and some non-governmental organizations in Indian Kashmir. The organizations have demanded a ban on the reality show in the state saying that the programme was "obscene" and doesn't go with the cultural values and ethos of the region.
"The content of Bigg Boss aired on an entertainment channel at prime time is mostly obscene and not fit for family viewing. Such programmes only encourage obscenity and nothing else," General Secretary of Valley Citizens Council (VCC) Imdad Saqi told Agence India Press.
"The programme makers have not kept the cultural ethos under consideration and the behavior, language and physical proximity doesn't go with the cultural values of the valley," Saqi said.
He expressed surprise that the state authorities wasted no time in banning informative channels like Press TV and Geo TV, Iranian and Pakistani news channels respectively, but had turned "deaf, blind and dumb" to this "cultural onslaught".
Saqi said there was a need to monitor the other popular entertainment channels as well.
"Expletives are used in some serials as if that was the civilized way to interact in a family," he said.
Meanwhile, scores of students also criticized the programme saying that such programes are only time consuming.
"What is good for me cannot be good for others, but that doesn't mean the authorities will air anything. Such programs are time consuming, which only kills our time and they should be banned," wishing anonymity a Kashmir university scholar said.
Bigg Boss is a popular TV reality show broadcast in India. It follows the Big Brother format, which was first developed by Endemol in the Netherlands. During the show the celebrity contestants stay in a single house for about three months, with no connection to the outside world. They are overseen by a mysterious person known as 'Bigg Boss', whose only presence in the house is through his voice. (AIP)
