The popularity of Multi User Dungeon (MUD) was then shifted to the USA in 1980s, where personal computers with modems allowed multiple players to use online service providers and play multi player games. By 1974, the graphical multiplayer online games were introduced, which supported 32 users. These games were advanced graphical games but due to their proprietary nature, it was not possible to spread them until 1979. Then came textual games, running on UNIX, DOS and VMS which were accessible to public.

By early 1990s, use of Internet was limited and online games were provided by proprietary services. Since then commercial game developers started putting their games on the internet for general public.

These days, the entertainment world has seen a new dimension since the invention of video games. They were much filled with fun and entertaining, but lacked portability. To solve these problems, online games came as a solution.

The online games are played between two or more players and all required is a computer and Internet connection.
