Jaundice, (also known as icterus, attributive adjective: icteric) is a yellowish pigmentation of the skin, the conjunctival membranes over the sclerae (whites of the eyes), and other mucous membranes caused by hyperbilirubinemia (increased levels of bilirubin in the blood).

This hyperbilirubinemia then causes increased levels of bilirubin in the extracellular fluids.

Jaundice is not a disease but rather a sign that can occur in many different diseases. Jaundice is the yellowish staining of the skin and sclerae (the whites of the eyes) that is caused by high levels in blood of the chemical bilirubin.

Jaundice is described as yellow discolouration of the eyes, which may be accompanied by deep yellow coloured urine. Usually patients have decrease appetite. Jaundice per se is a symptom but not a disease.

The color of the skin and sclerae vary depending on the level of bilirubin. When the bilirubin level is mildly important, they are yellowish.

When the bilirubin level is high, they tend to be brown.

The patient should be put on a juice fast for a week. The juices of oranges, lemons, grapes, pears, carrots, beets and sugarcane can be taken.

A hot water enema should be taken daily throughout this period to ensure regular bowel elimination, thereby preventing the absorption of rotten, poisonous material into the blood stream. Juice fast may be sustained till the acute symptoms subside.

Causes of Jaundice

Jaundice occurs when there is broken of the liver. The malfunction may occur if there is an obstruction in the bile ducts. These bile ducts actually discharge the bile salts and the various pigments into the intestine.

When there is an obstruction present in jaundice, the bile that has to get into the intestine gets mixed with the blood

Symptoms of Jaundice

1. Yellow coloration of the eyes, skin, tongue and urine.

2. Loss of appetite.

3. Dull pain in the liver region.

4. Nausea, severe constipation, great weakness.

5. Fever, headache and undue fatigue.

Treatment of Jaundice

Bitter gourd is a good treatment for jaundice. Grind a bitter gourd and add water in it. A person who is suffering from jaundice should e known this mixture two times a day. It helps to reduce the symptoms of jaundice.

Juice of bitter luffa is a good treatment for jaundice. You can hit the bitter gourd and squeeze it through cloth to obtain the juice. Now, place some drops of juice on your palm and drawn from side to side the nostrils. It is helpful in relieving.

Home Remedy for Jaundice

1. Extract the juice of bitter luffa by thumping and squeezing through a cloth. Take the juice on the palm and slowly sniff it. The juice should be drawn from side to side the nostrils.

2. The green leaves of the radish are also an effective home remedy. Pound the leaves and extract the juice from them. Intake at least one pound of this juice daily.

3. Another effective remedy would be to mash a banana and add to it a tablespoon of honey. Have this mixture two times a day.

4. In a glass of buttermilk, mix a pinch of black pepper. Intake this for about a week.

5. Take 4 grams of Indian gooseberry with a glass of water. Have this thrice a day for about 20 days.

6. In a cup of boiling water, add 8-10 lemon leaves. Cover it with a lid for about 5 minutes. Now, strain the liquid and drink it. Repeat this for 4-5 days.
