Hyundai has been proving that a little company can make a big impact - and now it's really not a little company any longer. But safety awards like the recent one given to the Hyundai Sonata prove that it's not about hype or high sales - it's about quality.
The Sonata was awarded the highest rating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's crash test rating New Car Assessment Program. Receiving a top safety rating, the Sonata employs advanced airbag technology, high-strength steel body structure, Electronic Stability Control and active and passive safety technology.

"The Sonata nameplate has historically raised the bar for safety in the mid-size sedan category, dating back to the introduction of standard Electronic Stability Control on the 2006 Sonata," said President and CEO of Hyundai Motor America John Krafcik. "The 2011 Sonata furthers our commitment to safety with a suite of equipment and third-party test results that are unsurpassed in the category."
The NHTSA puts vehicles through an entire battery of tests, including a side pole crash test, The board also has begun to use female crash test dummies to better simulate crash scenarios. Hyundai has packed the Sonata with a variety of safety features including six airbags and active head restraints. Sonata also uses single-style rear-seat head restraints which allow for better driver visibility, front-seat seatbelt pretension, load limiters, three-point seatbelts for all seats, and rear-seat Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) child seat system.
The ratings from NHTSA also added an Overall Vehicle Score to its tally, which combines the results from frontal crash tests, side crash tests and rollover resistance to provide an average risk for injury or potential rollover. The 2011 Sonata scored received five-star ratings in the side impact and rollover and four-star in the frontal test for an overall five-star score.
