subject: Minoan Civilization: Facts [print this page] The Minoan Civilization is from the Bronze Age. This is a civilization that has come out of the island of Crete and it then flourished from the twenty seventh century all the way to the fifteenth century. This place was rediscovered in the twentieth century ad this is because of the research and work of the brilliant British archeologists, Sir Arthur Evans.
This happens to be the first link in the European chain. This place has early inhabitants of the community that settled here in the year one hundred and twenty eight thousand BC. This is approximately around the Middle Paleolithic age. Until the year five thousand BC, these were the first signs at where there were advancements made in agriculture. This marked the beginning of the Minoan Civilization.
These people were called Minoan after the mythical King Minos. This was associated with the Greek Myth with the Labyrinth. There are some acknowledged facts about the Caphtor, and these can only be reconciled with Crete. This was observed by John Strange in the novel odyssey. After many centuries of destruction, it was known that the descendant civilization of King Minos
The palaces are best known for their building types. There are many monumental buildings which have been excavated on this island. The archeologists, who came to this place; unearthed most of the large archives, and these were used for evidence and for purposes that could serve in administration.
When these palaces were excavated they were found to have unique features. There are also features that you share with them which are quite apart from the other structures. Even the palaces were multi storeyed. The interior and exterior staircases had huge columns and magazines with a capacity for storing things. These were accompanied with many courtyards.
If you bother associating the calendar dates for this period, you will see that the archeologists modified what they though of as pottery styles. This also divides the Minoan period on three eras. One if the Early Minoan, the middle Minoan and the Late Minoan.
The volcanic eruption and its time of occurrence is a major controversy. Although if you try and find out through radio carbon dating, it indicated that the time was around the seventeenth century BC in the Minoan Civilization. The radio carbon dates also are in conflict with what the archeologists use to synchronize eruption. When this is done with the conventional chronology of Egypt then there is a date that is obtained from around a period of seventy five years.
