Doncaster is a large town in South Yorkshire located about 20 miles from Sheffield with a population of roughly 68,000. Now in its 21st year, there is something in it for everyone. The judges do not take the size of the garden into consideration when deciding on the best one, since creativity, originality and colour are much more important factors.The competition presents great opportunities for local businesses, since they can sponsor one of the competition categories as well as entering the Best Commercial Premises category.Judging took place in June, July and August 2010.
The results for each of the categories were announced at a special invite-only presentation evening at the Keepmoat Stadium on the 3rd of November. The award for Best Presented Garden in DN4 houses was judged by the overall quality of the plants and design and maintenance of the garden. The award for Best Hanging Basket or Container in DN4 Homes was judged on how interesting and original the display was, regardless of shape or size. The Commercial Premises award went to shops, pubs, restaurants, hotels and more and was judged on how much they contribute to the attractiveness of the local area. The award for Community or Group was judged on use of plants, how much they encouraged the local community to get involved and environmental friendliness and cleanliness of their practice.
All in all, the Doncaster in Bloom competition brought a broad section of the community together and highlighted why Doncaster is such a good place to live.
