subject: Liposuction: For Who And For What [print this page]

Of course there are many who set their sights on the procedure as a sole solution to body sculpting, and while there is a market for using the procedure for such purposes, in actuality, most liposuction procedures are done in conjunction with other plastic surgeries to obtain optimal results.

Before you consider this or any other plastic or cosmetic surgery, make sure you are a healthy and ideal candidate. You should be in overall good health. Smokers are always encouraged to kick the habit before undergoing any surgery as the effects of smoking on the body deter the body from natural healing, and it is well known that those who smoke have more serious complications after medical procedures than even those patients who are former smokers.

For liposuction surgery especially, you are encouraged to be dedicated to your health. It is not a solution for weight loss; it is an additional tool to help with areas of the body that are not responsive to weight loss. It is also not a permanent solution. You can regain fat after the procedure, and you will if you do not maintain a healthy lifestyle.

For most, it is suggested to be within an attainable distance of a doctor approved healthy weight before undergoing the procedure which is meant to address areas of the body that just will not respond to diet and exercise. It is essentially a way to contour your body to fit a certain body type. If no matter how much weight you lose, you do not have a distinct waist line, for example, you may be good candidate.

Cosmetic procedures such as breast reductions, tummy tucks, and even some face lifts are conducive to the need of liposuction in conjunction with the basic procedures themselves, and many lipo procedures that take place today are conjunctive ones that piggy back other cosmetic surgeries to help obtain optimum results. Tummy tucks for example often present the need for the fat removing procedure as a means of contouring the body to meet the patient's goals and desires. Liposuction is nearly the essence of breast reduction, and come facelift procedures use the surgery as a go to tool.

A consultation with a surgeon is the best way to determine if you are a good candidate to undergo the procedure, and even if you meet most or all of the health regulations, it can be determined that your skin will not be responsive to such a procedure. Most failed liposuction surgery situations are due to the patient forging in less than optimal situations, so in addition to being dedicated to your own health, heed your doctor's advice.
