How to Handle Other Causes of Roof Leaks

Roof leaks cause a lot of problems in your house. Aside from causing electrical problems and damages to your electronics and property, it is the main cause of deterioration inside the house's internal structure. There are various kinds of roofs out there and a lot of checks can be done in order for you to detect the causes of the leaks. Shingles can be checked for damages and it can be repaired.

You can check the integrity of the shingles, you can heat it up and reshape curled ones or you can replace them all together. Once the panels are remade, you can then secure them again with the proper roof cement. Flat roofs can also be fixed, you can locate the parts of the roofing felt that has absorbed much water and has expanded.

You can cut up the roof felt and drain off all the water with mops and rags. Once the felt and the rest of the roof are dry, you can apply roof cement on the place where you cut off the felt and then firmly reattach the roofing felt. Nail the tear on both flaps and apply roof cement again on top of the nails and the felt to make sure it is water tight again.

Common roof leaks can easily be handled. Damaged shingles are easily seen, curled up and rotting shingles can also be easily replaced. The roofing felt of flat roofs expand as they absorb water, puddles indicate places where the damage has taken place.

But once the leak cause can no longer be determined, it might be best to try and look at other causes other than the new roof itself. The roof valley is one of the many places that leaks aside from the main roofing itself. Once you cannot find the source of the leak, like places where the roof paint has chipped, try to trail along the roof valley.

You can fix this problem by replacing the valley with thin sheets of metal or patch small holes f the valley with the same material as the original roof valley, using other metals will cause corrosion and more holes will appear. Cut the metal sheet bigger than the hole, apply roofing cement over the hole and bend the formed sheet accordingly before you firmly put it back in place.
