Tourism Industry and the Current Government in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

As a native of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines I am rather proud of my country. This country is beautiful and is developing. The country is slowly earning its name in the international tourism industry as a new honeymoon destination in the Caribbean. As a part of the tourism industry of the country I am a bit hopeful about its future. If the government takes the necessary initiatives in future, the tourism industry of this country can thrive manifold and we can earn better revenue from this industry. But there lie a number of problems that is not allowing us to achieve this goal.

If you ask what have you heard about Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to a foreigner, 7 out of 10 will tell you about our country being one of the top marijuana producer in the Caribbean's. That is not a very good reputation for a country that is trying hard to find a firm footing in tourism industry. It will rather be smearing the country's reputation as a honeymoon destination. Those honeymooners who were looking for an enjoyable calm vacation will not consider this country as a possible destination. This will hamper our tourism industry to a great extent. So, in order to save our tourism industry the government of this country should take some strong action against the marijuana production. The drug lords should also be dealt with. However, in the nine years of his regime our honorable Prime Minister, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has done nothing to resolve this issue. If the ULP government does nothing to solve this issue it will take a toll on the tourism industry and the people associated with this industry will suffer.

If the tourism industry of the country does not flourish then it will give rise to unemployment and poverty. This is something no responsible citizen will want for its country. The poverty and unemployment will lead to an increased crime rate in the country. The crime rate in our country is already high. There are a number of reported cases of murder, theft and atrocities against women. The last crime is dealt with utter callousness by the police and the government officials. Can you believe it that in the year 2008 the UN report revealed that SVG has the third highest number of rapes in the country? It is really a pathetic scenario. How can we even hope than the newlyweds will choose our country? Then again, in a country that has its honorable Prime Minister accused for sexual assault charges, we cannot expect much. I sometimes wonder, whether the Prime Minister is doing justice to his office! He has neither proved himself to be an outstanding Prime Minister nor proved himself to be a gentleman (can a man who has rape charges on him be called a gentleman?). You tell me, do you want to see this man as the Prime Minister of the country any longer? I am telling you frankly, I am not going to vote for him this time. It's time for you to decide.
