Understanding The Different Digital Memory Cards

Computer memory in digital photography in essence means storing images in the usual cameras without the need for film. The use of rolls of film which are processed and developed to come out with pictures are relegated aside with the digital cameras recording images with the use of digital flash memory cards.

The primary advantage of using memory cards is that they can be reused repeatedly and indefinitely. You can easily transfer images to your computer and erase the data in your digital flash memory cards and store in new data and images. It is worthy to note that there are several cards available in the market and it is up to you to choose the appropriate card for your devices.

A lot of digital cameras are designed to accept multiple memory cards. Usually, when you purchase your digital camera, you are given low capacity computer memory cards such as the 16 MB or 32 MB configurations. These capacities can only be good for back up purposes. Remember that the built in computer memory is not to be used as an alternative to a memory card, because aside from storing very few images, there may be problems with your images getting corrupted due to the size of your memory card.

The built in memory does not have the capacity to be transferred or moved. You have a choice of the SD memory card, the XD memory card, the compact flash card or the SmartMedia card.

Among the different digital flash memory cards, the SD memory card has acquired the distinction of being famous in the last few years, probably because of its relatively small size with appropriate memory capacity. This card has a capacity range from 32 MB to 2 GB. There is of course clear distinction in its prices.

The XD memory card is a slightly modern version of the SD card, but it maintains the same design and function for all intents and purposes. A lot of digital camera manufacturers choose this card type even though it may be more expensive than its predecessor. The XD card is available only in 1 GB capacity, but this is relatively a large capacity even for professional photographers who take loads and loads of pictures.

An alternative technique in saving your images is through the use of compact flash cards as a modern computer memory feature. These CF cards measure about an inch and are used extensively. These cards are sturdy and dependable owing to their solid form and absence of moving parts. The CF cards come in larger capacities of up to 8 GB. Aside from the larger capacities, some manufacturers have also offered these cards in faster speeds. With quick recording, multiple shots can be made by the professional photographer to capture momentous events. The CF cards are most appropriate for professional photography.
