The Perfect After Workout Meal

After an intense workout many of us reach for an electrolyte filled drink or our protein powder drinks. While these are okay at supplying a few key minerals and nutrients, there's something even better, miso soup.

In order to understand why miso soup fits the bill we have to understand what is going on inside your body after a workout. First, you have sweat off quite a bit of water; so taking in enough water to replenish yourself is crucial. Next, with the sweat came salt, so we need to replenish with salt also. During your workout you took in a lot more oxygen then usual, which cause free radicals to break down your system, so we need some antioxidants. Lastly we need to replenish with minerals, micronutrients and macronutrients like proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Common sports drinks fall short of supplying all of these needed things. Miso soup fulfills all of these requirements.

Miso soup is quick and easy to make. Here is a simple recipe:

2 cups filtered water

1 dried shitake mushroom cut up into small pieces

4 1"x1" cubes of soft tofu

1 tablespoon of light miso paste

1/8 cup dried seaweed cut up into small pieces

1 tablespoon fresh cut green onion

To make:

Put saucepan on medium/high heat. Pour water in medium saucepan with shitake pieces, cook for 4 minutes. Add tofu cubes and cook for another 3 minutes. Add seaweed pieces and turn off heat, wait for water to cool down for 2 minutes. Add miso paste and stir till mixed. Pour into a bowl, sprinkle green onions on top and enjoy.
