subject: Live Longer With Alpha-carotene And A Whole Body Cleanse [print this page] Your mother was, of course, right: you need to eat your fruits and vegetables. If you do, you just might live longer. It seems the good news about antioxidants keeps getting better and better. It's too bad, though, that your mother didn't know about certain whole body cleanse programs you could use to boost the antioxidant benefits of eating your fruits and veggies.
A recent study, which is to be released this spring in the print version of Archives of Internal Medicine (medicalnewstoday.com, 23 November 2010), suggests that the antioxidant alpha-carotene may be "associated with a reduced risk of dying-- good news indeed. This carotenoid antioxidant, available in many orange- and dark-colored fruits and vegetables, appears to be "associated with lower risk of dying form cardiovascular disease or cancer."
Antioxidants, remember, have the job counteracting the deleterious effects of oxidation connected with various essential bodily functions. So it is, in effect, something of a catch-22 situation. The life-sustaining oxidation reactions release free radicals, which in turn initiate reactions that damage cells, and antioxidants terminate these damaging free-radical reactions and counteract the cell-destroying aspects of oxidation.
But here's the rub. Exercise, which of course is crucial for health, increases oxygen utilization and so steps up the production of free radicals. So, in order to promote health and fitness, you need to exercise. But then you also need something to counteract the concomitant oxidation-related damage to cells and DNA. And alpha-carotene may be the answer-- whether you get it from food or from a well designed whole body cleanse that includes vital nutrients.
Chaoyang Li and colleagues, working for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, conducted a study to determine "the relationship between alpha-carotene and the risk of death among 15,318 adults age 20 and older." What they found was that higher blood concentrations of alpha-carotene correlated with reduced risk of death stemming from certain chronic diseases. Li et al. found that, compared to individuals in the study with blood levels of alpha-carotene "between 0 and 1 micrograms per deciliter," those with a blood concentration of alpha-carotene of 2-3 micrograms per deciliter had a 23% reduction in the risk of death, and those with a concentration of 9 or more micrograms per deciliter had an astounding 34% lower risk of death.
And it doesn't stop there.
These researchers also found that alpha-carotene may play a larger role in inhibiting lung cancer than formerly thought. Li et al. contend that consuming fruits and vegetables with high alpha-carotene content is "more strongly associated with a decreased risk of lung cancer than . . . consumption of other types of vegetables."
The upshot is that carotenoid antioxidants, especially alpha-carotene, counteract the "oxygen-related damage to DNA, proteins and fats" and thus serve to combat "chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer." And these antioxidants are readily available in dark-colored fruits and vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, broccoli, spinach, and collards. But to make sure you get all the alpha-carotene you need to ward off cancer and heart disease, it would be wise to use a quality antioxidant supplement-- like that found in only a handful of the many body cleanse systems on the market.
