New laws promote safe driving in Ireland
In 2008, Ireland's RSA reported 279 deaths on Irish roads. This was the lowest number of deaths since 1959, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. The RSA believes inexperienced drivers cause of many of these accidents and introduced nine new measures as a result.
Starting September 1, 2010, every new driver must complete initial basic training with an approved instructor, a theory test, a Hazard Perception test, and an improved standard driving test.
Driving offenses were also included in the RSA's new measures. New drivers who commit a driving offense now risk disqualification, penalty points and harsher sentencing. Those who drink and drive are subject to a new 0.2 limit, which is one of the lowest in Europe. The RSA hopes this will help reduce drink driving arrests, which peaked in 2002 with more than 13,000 arrests.
