Why you should spend New Years Eve 2010 in Boston

If you're in Boston over Christmas or New Years there's plenty on offer for every visitor. From friendly, family fun to late night parties all tastes are catered for.

First Night: Boston

A New Year's Eve celebration doesn't have to be a raucous affair. That's why in 1976, a group of Boston artists and residents started First Night, an alternative to New Year's Eve revelry that had seemingly become the norm. First Night provides a family-friendly atmosphere with a plethora of options throughout Boston to choose from.

First Night is the country's oldest and largest New Year's Eve celebration of local arts. Now in its 34th year, the day-long, family-friendly event provides an alcohol-free outlet for all ages, complete with music, dance, ice sculptures, fireworks, and more.

First Night 2011 will feature more than 1,000 artists in 200 exhibitions and performances throughout more than 35 locations throughout Boston, including the Arlington Street Church, Museum of Science, Copley Square, the Improv Asylum, and many more. Click here for an interactive map of all locations, including where to locate all nearby hotels, T stops, and parking areas.

Cost: $18, children go free.

The Resolution Ball

While First Night may provide all round family fun, The Resolution Ball offers something for late night revellers looking to dance the night away to the wee small hours. Taking place at the Top of the Prudential Center, this soiree includes: live music and DJ-spun tunes, a cocktail reception with complimentary hors d'oeuvres, a silent auction, party favours and much more. When the clock strikes 12, take in the breathtaking, 360-degree view of Boston, accompanied by a booming fireworks display. Formal attire is required and the music style is a mix of: Swing, Motown, Soul, R&B, 70s, 80s, 90s, and top-40 hits. Tickets are $199 but considerable discounts are available online.
