This is my experience on my first project which gave me a positive output to get this project.I was in for an interview for a seo position. I was been given a pre-work and I was thinking how can I show my skills in a systematic way.I have used my training materials combined together and made a excel sheet by putting all in order.
To start with I have done a review on the site
first on the website url:- checking whether it is canonicalised.this can be simply done just typing in your internet explorer using http://,www,or the site name without http or www.If all takes to same page then you can say it is canonicalised.why is this important? Reason being is that if the site is not canonicalised then the search engine counts more than one website under same name.
Domain age: - It may sound less important but I did because it is a ranking factor where no one can change or compete with if a site equally optimised but stand below a site with age on it. You can easy find this by right clicking on the site in a Firefox explorer.
Keywords:- the main part of seo work is keyword. we are here to rank a site on a particular keyword .If we don't know what keyword we are to optimise the site then it is 100% guarantee we wont be in first page of a search engine. There are many tool which shows the search position on keyword.
Sitemaps- this is also very important for a site to be in top position on search. This gives clear information of our website to both user and search engines. you can submit your sitemap to google webmaster so that google is updated with your site's information.
On page Optimisation: - This is the main area where SEO specialist work with.you have to look for the following area: -
Title tag:- main thing to check whether title contains keyword and they are unique and not exceed more than 63 characters.
Heading 1,2 : - the keyword should be used in h1 and h2 this tells thae search engine that our site is relevant to the keyword searched
Bold /italicised :- if the keyword is bold and Italicised then it helps a ranking factor for site in top position.
Image text: - check whether the image is text with proper keyword. Not with image o1.jpg
Anchor text: - Next very important ranking factor is Anchor text. This helps to show the search engine that having anchor text in different website for a particular keyword recommends the site is quality site. Ancj=hor text can be used inside the site and it is recommended.
Robots.txt: - This tell search engine what to access form the site and what not.
I hope this would help for starting a seo work for a site. Even though there are 200 ranking factors to be considered, I believe if this 7 steps are done then one can bring a site on top pages. I have experienced it. May be it wont work fully if competitions exist.
