Potty training can be a challenging time for both child and parents. As parents we want our child's life to be as simple, safe, and happy as possible. On the other hand, we want our child to be obedient, happy, and easily taught. All of these may suffer during potty training, but it doesn't have to be a nightmare.
Before you even start potty training you should notice clues your child gives when he or she has to go to the bathroom. All children generally will give some clues, but they are not necessarily the same ones other children use. Once you realize that your child is aware he or she needs to potty before using the diaper, it's time to start potty training.
Whether you train your child to use the regular potty from the start or purchase a special toddler potty is up to you. You may also decide to purchase a potty seat to go on a regular toilet, along with a step to make access for the child easier. Toddler potties come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. It may help if the toddler gets to pick his own potty out. Sometimes having his or her own special potty encourages using it instead of a diaper, but not always. Try not to allow the toddler potty to become a toy, insure its use only as a place to pee or poop.
You may try a reward system to encourage your toddler to use the big toilet. Encouraging your child throughout the day, avoiding frustration when accidents happen, and remaining patient during the entire process will all help the success of your child's potty training in the shortest period of time. It may be difficult, but eventually your child will get the hang of it and you may even miss those diapers.
