subject: Getting Fitter While Hiking [print this page]

There are many different options for people to choose from as they select their exercise activity of preference. Different people have differing criteria for what makes a fitness session or sport one that is worthwhile, so having the activity meet the expectations of the individual is an important factor to consider.

For example, those who are looking for a social experience to compliment their physical one should look into team sports, because of the bonds of friendship that being pitted against common opponents will instill in teammates. Those who want to have a unique experience that they can brag about to their friends should choose a sport that reflects their nontraditional nature, such as bungee jumping or surfing.

For those who want to have a simple and enjoyable experience that essentially pits the participant against themselves and the natural challenge of nature, other option might be considered. Appropriate sports that fall under this category include hiking, rock climbing, and bouldering.

These options are unique because while they might be undertaken in groups, the effort relies solely on the individual, and anyone else who might be present at the time simply reflects a group support that the person may find useful based on their athletic preference. Therefore, the people who tend to gravitate toward these options are often more solitary people who want to enjoy the challenge involved with conquering something that the landscape has to offer.

Hiking is an excellent choice in this setting. It combines simplicity, ease of access, and wide availability with a workout that is determined by the physical abilities of the participant and how hard they want to push themselves along the way.

Hiking is the act of climbing up the side of a natural obstacle or crossing a large stretch of the landscape on foot, usually following a set trail that guides the participant safely along the way. There is usually a target objective that the person is trying to reach in this setting, such as a scenic outlook or mountain peak.

The concept is a beautifully simple one, but there is a surprisingly deep complexity to the process that makes the sport more technical and knowledge based than some people realize. The experiences that one has when hiking never play out the same way twice, and so much of the variety is up to the individual participant that the options for rewarding experiences are practically limitless.

The pace of the hike and the duration of it all are reliant upon the desires of the participant. The same stretch of trial may take on a different tone of the person decides to push themselves harder and faster along the way.

How the trip is experienced is also up to the individual. For example, a person going hiking may elect to go for a quick walk up a trail until they start feeling fatigue.

They also have the option to do a moderately stressful quick trip up an incline while carrying water, stopping only when a certain point is reached. Still again, there exists the option for momentous undertakings through entire mountain ranges while carrying many pounds of gear and food if the person feels so inclined.

One of the primary draws of hiking it how it must be done outdoors, creating a state where the person is walking and exercising while out in nature, enjoying the sights as they go. Having scenery to appreciate as well as having it there to distract the mind makes for a more enjoyable venture because of the sense of appreciation and wonder.

There are many physical benefits that are associated with the outdoor sport of hiking. Not only will overall strength levels be increased as the person goes over a long distance, but endurance will be substantially increased as well because of the long and steady nature of the exercise.

Hiking is one of the more rewarding ways to get a thorough workout, because of the way that it combines self competition and the intensity of the moment with scenery and the ability to look back and see physical progress during the activity. This allows a sense of purpose and satisfaction within the individual participating in the activity, which helps make the undertaking a worthwhile reward in its own right.
