Contact lenses may lead to dry eyes?

Contact lenses are some of the most widely used vision corrective devices. Some of them are manufactured with water content of certain degree, so as to offer eyes more moisture. Of course, this is also firmly linked to materials to be employed. For example, lenses made from silicon hydro gel can offer less water than other lenses.

On the whole, contact lenses may absorb moisture from eyes in certain conditions. This will worsen the situation in some cases. This is also why some people find their eyes are uncomfortable and irritated after wearing lenses for a whole day. Luckily there are now some special lenses that seldom absorb moisture from eyes and keep eye moist all day long. Some soft lenses are particularly designed for people with dry eyes.

When tears can not be effectively produced, eye may become very dry and people feel very uncomfortable. This is usually called dry eyes. Of course, specific factors leading to this problem vary a lot, including allergen, drug, eye infection or contact lenses. And the symptom will be much more obvious when more moisture is evaporated from eyes.

Of course, some moisture-keeping lenses are also available in the market- RGP (rigid gas permeable) lenses can do a perfect job in prevent the evaporation of moisture from eyes. Though these lenses are rigid, they can also allow oxygen in and will not lead to any problems caused by lack of oxygen. Therefore, these lenses might be ideal options in certain cases.
