The Zyban warning you may not be aware of. Zyban was approved for use in the United States by the FDA in 1985 as an antidepressant by the name of Wellbutrin. In 1997 Zyban (bupropion) was also approved by the FDA to be used as a smoking cessation aid. In May 2010 a new study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology has stated that pregnant women who used Zyban early in their pregnancy have an increased risk of delivering a baby with heart defects.

Zyban is classified as a pregnancy Category C medicine, which means that it could potentially cause harm to your unborn child, yet many women took the drug unaware of this.

Researchers have found that over 12,700 infants born between 1997 and 2004 in the USA, whose mothers had taken Zyban during their pregnancy, have more than double the risk of a heart defect known as left outflow defects. The most common type of defect found within this study was coarctation of the aorta, which is a congenital heart defect that causes narrowing of the aorta and normally requires surgical repair.
