There are many different reasons why you might want to use holographic displays in theatre. Some may simply want to better enhance the program and make it more interesting for the audience. Some might want to introduce characters who are not human or who should be played by famous people. Others may simply want to use holograms as a way adding to the scenery or lighting.
But how do you get started? Well the best place to start is by doing a little research. Find a company that provides holographic displays, designs holograms, or even produces entire fixed results for you and runs the equipment during the show. There are many different choices.
Discuss your expectations with the company. More often than not they will make suggestions to you on how to make your production better, and will give you ideas that you might not have thought of before.
Decide how much of the show you want to be heightened by 3D displays. If you are doing a fairly traditional stage play you probably don't want too much technology to take over the performance.
For instance, in a Shakespearean play you could probably get away with using 3D displays for ghosts, but you might take away from the performance if you also added shooting stars or wild animals made from holograms. However, if you were planning to do a less traditional play or even a laser light show or a musical performance, you might be able to get away with a lot more use of holographic technology.
