subject: Making Cooking Exciting Through Homemade Aprons [print this page]

During the 17th century, aprons are already known and it is undeniable that they become part of a get up of a woman. Aprons are very useful in preventing the clothes from getting dirty or soiled due to conduct of house works like, cleaning, gathering of firewood and cooking. These days, aprons are getting back to the mainstream because it becomes a fashion statement and also because of its functionality.

Aprons underwent many changes because of the growing number of materials that may be used to make them. White aprons are the ones oftentimes used by women before. Now, aprons are seldom used or worn because of the existence of cheap clothes and washing machines.

Waist aprons and bib aprons are the two styles of aprons. Waist aprons, as its name suggests, is worn at the waist. It covers the lower section of the body. The said apron is worn through tying the two strips of fabric attached to it on the waist. Meanwhile, the bib apron covers the entire body. It has a strip that is for neck and strips that are tied at the waist.

Linen, cotton or other washable but durable fabrics are the common materials of cooking aprons. Leather is the material for aprons used when welding, carpentry and soldering.

A dishtowel can be turned to an apron provided that it is large enough. For a dishtowel to become an apron, it must be 18x28 inches. Get the towel and fold it into half making certain that the printed side is located in the inside, then fold its bottom. Next, fold the upper section midway to make pocket. Press and pin the sides. Sew the folded sides together. You can also sew lines on it to come up with two pockets.

The ties for the waist should be twice the measurement of the waist then added with 30 inches and its width must be at least four inches. In sewing the strips, make sure you stitch it on the right side of the fabric. Then sew its ends and attach it into the apron. In making its tie for the neck, get the middle of the tie and stitch both ends to the apron.

At this point, you already have your very own apron. You can even make another one if you wished to and you can play with its designs.
