To be totally honest with you, I've read lots and lots of really BAD advice in this arena....with many folks offering suggestions that are doomed to fail, and with all due respect, are usually NOT ideas that are going to help your business grow, or your content's influence, expand.
Here is what I do, it works wonderfully well....it's totally "white hat", and MOST importantly, it serves many masters and a multitude of purposes all in one fell swoop ALL while giving your content the widest, broadest audience as quickly as possible.
Create a small network of 3-5 niche blogs, self hosted WordPress, and if POSSIBLE, each on a separate host or server
Install Flock, a totally free social web browser, which allows you to "clip" content from around the web and remotely post to your web properties
Write and submit your articles as usual.....using keyword targeted titles
Use FLOCK to clip, little pieces of your article content, and POST to the 3-5 blogs that you set up in step one. Change the titles in the "flock poster" and keep them keyword friendly as well. Write a little introduction to each clipped post (within the flock poster window) and then hit POST......and your feeder blogs are now populated with your intro, a little clipped text from your article, a keyword friendly title AND, most importantly, a keyword friendly LINK to the article, on the directory itself.
Hopefully that didn't sound too confusing......it's really NOT, and the benefits are, as mentioned above, many fold.
You have new content on your blogs, that is niche related, keyword friendly, AND will rank well on it's own.
Your articles are getting 3-5 anchor text rich back links from quality blogs with unique content as well.
