Mobile phones are also called cell phones or handsets. Mobiles are a part and parcel of daily urban life. For most of us the day starts with the persistent ringing of the alarm on your handset. Previously set reminders of important events are periodically received in the course of the day. Plans are formulated and cancelled. At times even work either on call or on the internet is completed. People can be contacted in seconds via calls or SMS almost 24/7, 365 days a year. All this on portable gadgets called mobile phones.
Over the course of about a decade, the mobile phones industry over the world has grown in leaps and bounds. At one time handsets were a fashion statement available only to the upper echelon of society. But today it is available and affordable for almost every strata of society. They have practically become an inseparable part of daily routine. We cannot imagine a day without the security of our little handset somewhere within accessible reach.
Mobiles nowadays no longer play the role of just a mode of telephonic communication. They not only offer the highly popular mode of communication called texting, a.k.a SMS. But they now come with added extras like cameras, music players, internet access, touch-screens, sometimes even doubling up as mini computers; e.g. Blackberry. They fulfil functions like calendars, calculators, even location finders, as technology gets better and better. Anything to everything can practically be achieved via these inventions. The list is never-ending to the capabilities of a handset.
Most of the credit for these achievements in the field of mobiles goes to the companies like Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson and so on. The intense commercial competition between them pushes them to keep re-inventing the technology to come out with increasingly better phones at surprisingly affordable prices.
Service providers come out with better deals to offer, practically every few weeks! They thus allow ownership of cell phones to be practical and economical for everybody. But these phones have their drawbacks of harmful radiations, so they must be used judiciously not abused.
