subject: How Life Can Be A Dream - Achieving Your Goals [print this page] A lot of people - probably most of us - have at some point dreamed of being especially outstanding. Fantasies of being the star player on a team, or the homecoming queen, or fantastically rich - all these abound. Some simply want to be successful and have happy relationships.
With all these big dreams and lofty aspirations, it's unfortunate that our dreams can remain just that - dreams. All these personal ideals might as well be stored in the attic, gathering dust.
Don't get your hopes up.
Did you ever think that could be reversed? What about changing those dreams into reality through action?
Of all the problems we have, the key one which keeps us from achieving our goals might very well be in believing that things are "impossible." Many justifications resonate in the spirit and mind: "I can't do this." or "It's too hard." "It's too unrealistic." "No one can do this."
However, if everyone thought that, there would be no inventions, no innovations, and no breakthroughs in human accomplishment.
Now you may recall the story of baffled scientists to tried to apply the laws of aerodynamics to the simple bumblebee. They all agreed that in theory it was impossible for the lowly bee to fly at all. However, no one ever got around to telling the bee that - so it continues to fly through its life with no difficulties at all.
The real self-imposed limit is where people suffer from dreaming outrageous dreams and then never act on them. The result is what we've seen above - broken dreams and bored lives in front of TV sets.
To the degree you limit yourself with doubt and assumptions of pre-ordained failure, you may never be able to have any breakthrough past what you now consider to be impossible. Sky high dreams can only fail when you take no action toward any goal you've set.
Try this exercise: Take a sheet of paper and write down the main goals you wouldn't mind achieving. Make three headers -Things you know you can do; Things you might be able to do; and Things which are impossible to do.
Now work out the steps you can see right now that would help you achieve that goal. Put them under each header according to how hard you think they are to attain or achieve.
Every day, review your goal statement and look over those items you wrote down under those headers. See which ones you can get done that day. Try accomplishing the ones under that header "Things you know you can do." And occasionally, you might even get to some of those under "Things you might be able to do."
As you start getting more and more things done in the first column, you can work on getting more things done in the second column, as these will probably become more possible to do. As you get better at getting things done, you can look over that third column of "Things that are impossible to do" and see if you now start seeing how some of those might be able to get done.
As you iterate through this process, you will find out that the goals you thought were impossible become easier to accomplish. And the impossible begin to seem possible after all.
Just don't limit yourself - that's the point. Simply break down every doal into doable stepst you can start on right now. As you get these done, then you'll find that the 'might be able to do' steps are also able to be accomplished when you break them down. Even the hardest steps can be accomplished as you break out the doable steps for these. You can now see the secret to making the impossible possible.
The only disappointed and disillusioned people are those who only dream and never take action.
Airplanes, Cable television, Moon Landings, even skyscrapers - all of these were initially thought of as impossible. But hard-working and dedicated people were able to make these into our current reality simply by breaking down the goal into doable steps and getting these pushed through to completion.
Just keep dreaming, and keep your dreams polished, bright. Keep them constantly in front of you along with your "to-do" list of doable actions. Plan your work and work your plan. Just as you keep moving along this line, you'll find that really nothing is ever impossible as long as you keep to this strategy - and keep in action.
Because your life could be a dream - if you really you want it to be.
